Nalanda, Takhshila and Vikramsila Universities were renowned seats of higher learning since ancient times and attracted students from all over the country and even from other countries like Korea, China, Burma, Ceylon, Tibet and Nepal. Today India has one of the largest higher education systems in the world.

After Independence, the University Education Commission was set up in 1948. Later on the Union Government decided to allocate grants to the Universities and Institutions of higher learning through the University Grants Commission. The UGC was formally established in November 1956 as a statutory body of the Government of India through an Act of Parliament for the coordination, determination and maintenance of standards of university education in India.

Section 22 (1)of UGC Act 1956 gives the right of conferring or granting degrees to a University which has been established or incorporated by or under a Central Act, a Provincial Act or a State Act or an institution deemed to be a University under section 3 or an institution specially empowered by an Act of Parliament to confer or grant degrees.

Recognition under section 2(f) states that “University” means a University established or incorporated by or under a Central Act, a Provincial Act or a State Act, and includes any such institution as may, in consultation with the University concerned, be recognized by the Commission in accordance with the regulations made in this behalf under this Act.

Thus, a University which has been established by a State Act shall feature in the list of Universities in UGC portal and Section 2(f) shall indicate only recognition and shall have no bearing on the Degree/ Diploma/ Certificate conferred by that University to its students.

Shri Venkateshwara University is established under a State Act and has already applied for recognition under Section 2(f) of UGC Act 1956. This information is available on the UGC website also.
